Rights/Permissions for Digital Images

In many cases the University of Michigan and the Bentley Historical Library do not hold copyright in items in the collections, nor images displayed online. Users of the of Bentley Historical Library images provided through the University of Michigan Library website assume full responsibility for their use of the materials presented by the Bentley Historical Library, including obtaining any required permissions from copyright or other rights holders. Researchers must make their own assessments of rights in light of their intended use.

Permission to use images and possible fees may be required by the copyright owner — independently of the Library. It is users’ responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the Library's collections. Transmission or reproduction of protected items beyond that allowed by fair use requires the permission of the copyright owners.

Images intended for use in some commercial products may be subject to University of Michigan licensing requirements and may not be used to suggest endorsement by the University of Michigan or any of its departments.

We are eager to hear from any rights owners, so that we may obtain accurate information. Upon request, we will remove material from public view while we address a rights issue.
