Whenne this letter was made and sealid kynge John vnder
ffonge his Crowne ayene of Pandolff and sende to the
Archebisshoppe Steven to come home and to his clerks eueryon
and lewde menne whom he had exiled and thay shulde haue
thayre londes and hir rentis that he wolde make fulle restitu
cyon of the goodes Þat he had taken wrongefully from heme
and Þanne kynge John and many of his lordes and Pandolff
wente to wynchestre and ressevid the Archebisshoppe Steven
and the kyng fille downe on his kneys to hym and saide faier
sire ye be welcome home Ande I cry you mercy Þat I haue
trespasid to you And thanne Þe Archebisshoppe toke hym vp
on his harmes and kyssid hym ouyoghte tymes And in seynte
swithyns chirche he assoylid hym of Þe centence this was
vpon seynt margarete his day And the Archebisshoppe we
nte anon for to synge mas and the kynge offrid a mars
of Gold And whenne the mas was done Þay wente to
vnderfonge theire londis and rentys with oute any
gayne saynge and made myrthe and joy Inowe but yoghet
was not the enterdityng done Þe relessid vnto Þe tyme
restitucyon were made of Þe goodes Þat kynge John had take
from holy Chirche And also that hym selfe shulde do ho
mage to the pope by a certen legate And Þanne pan
dolffe toke his lefe and went to Þe pope of Rome and
Þanne the Archebisshop lete before hym come prelatis
and muche othir peple atte Redynge and ther coun
sell what Þay shulde axe of Þe kynge for restitucion
and Þay ordeynyd that he shulde eve to Þe Archebisshop
iii l/m mars and to othir clerkis xv l/m mars be porcyons and
in the same tyme Bisshopp Tuscan come in to Þis londe
penitauncer of Rome by the popes comaundement ffor
because Þat kyng John ne none of his Eyres shulde euer
more aftir holde Þe Reines of Englonde and of Ireland
of Þe pope payng by yere as it is above seide howe
And when kynge John had Þe entirditing of Þis
do homage to Þe popes londe was for doon
